Mission Statement:
The mission of the Darlington County Planning Department is to promote the public health, safety and welfare through ensuring that the County adopted Development Standards Ordinance & policies, as well as State & Federal regulations are followed equally by all those planning new development of their land. Our goal is to assist the community, elected & appointed officials, builders & developers and all others to create an atmosphere of cooperation and participation in the betterment, continued development and lasting growth of Darlington County.

Staff Duties:
Responsibilities:
The Planning Commission meets once a month to hear, review and advise on land development issues, as well as grant or deny approval for subdivisions, ordinances, towers, and variances. The Commission works closely with the Planning Staff providing guidance, direction and approval in proposed development and regulation.

Membership:
The Planning Commission is a 8-member board, whose members are appointed by the Darlington County Council for up to two 3-year terms. Members generally represent different parts of the County.

We work closely with many other County departments in planning & regulatory issues, as well as with SCDOT (the State Highway Dept.), SCDHEC (for Septic Tanks, Stormwater Mgmt, etc.) USACE (Army Corp. of Engineers), local engineers, surveyors and contractors to help coordinate the many requirements associated with land development and the issuance of development permits.

Planning also maintains and updates the GIS County-wide road map and database, is responsible for the acquisition of County road right-of-way and drainage easements and processes all paperwork for the acceptance of new roads into the County. The staff also works closely with E-911 Addressing to assure proper access to and location of properties receiving an address for Emergency Response. Current projects include review & update of the Comprehensive Plan, drafting, adoption & implementation of new Stormwater regulations under the NPDES Phase II requirements and the South Darlington Watershed Drainage Project.

Planning Commission Meeting Schedule:
The staff receives all agenda items for the regular Planning Commission meetings. These meetings are scheduled normally on the third Tuesday of each month at the Courthouse Annex/EMS Building on 1625 Harry Byrd Hwy, Darlington just west of the Darlington Raceway at 5:30 PM. A complete request or application to appear on the meeting agenda must be received no later than the first Tuesday of each month.
